Above: What better way to kick off the last week of my 50s than with an early morning upper body workout? 6 days to 60 and counting!
My fitness transformation update, two months in.
My how time flies when you’re having fun?!! Hard to believe it has now been a full 8 weeks already since I finally declared once and for all that I would go ‘all in’ and give 100% effort in transforming my overall health and fitness, NO MATTER WHAT. I am happy to report that my results so far are even better than I could have hoped for!
Above: Two month progress report – Headed in the right direction
Eight weeks ago when I began the Arbonne 30 Days to Healthy Living Challenge I topped the scale at 257.5 pounds and this morning?… 243.2 pounds! My pant size has plummeted from a very snug 40″ waist to a comfortable 36″ and getting looser every day. My strength levels and muscle firmness continues to improve with each workout.
Above: See ya later inflammation!
Even more encouraging than the weight loss has been the reversal in overall body inflammation. One look at my before pictures and current shots proves it, especially in the face where there has been a dramatic reduction in swelling and puffiness. The extra water I was holding under my skin, particularly in my lower legs has also completely vanished. And last but certainly not least, my general overall sense of well-being is through the roof!
My Recipe for Success
I knew going into this transformation journey that I would have to implement a multi-pronged attack if I was to find any success at all. I have tried just dieting with limited results. Conversely, I have also tried just working out hard while not being mindful of the food I was shoving into my mouth and I am here to say that the adage “You can’t outwork a crappy diet” is definitely true.
I knew this time if I was going to have any real chance of making measurable progress, especially as I stare down my 60th birthday, I would have to incorporate healthy eating, supplementation, AND hard work in the gym consistently. So far… SO GOOD!
1.) Diet: I cycled through the Arbonne 30 Days to Healthy Living program twice and it has helped me to be more mindful of my food intake and I’m learning which foods are anti-inflammatory. As I mentioned in my recent Weight Loss Plateau blog post, I will now be taking it up a notch by working with a nutritionist and following a Macro-based eating plan.
2.) Workouts: I have been averaging 4 to 5 sessions in the gym, combining heavy lifting with occasional 20 to 30-minute treadmill cardio sessions utilizing the HIIT protocol. I plan to continue this, always changing up my exercises and workload to keep the muscles guessing, and, hopefully growing!
3.) Supplementation: This has been by far the biggest change for me this time around as I have never really given thoughtful consideration to the benefits of consistent, proper supplementation before. And I have to say, all things being equal, I truly believe that this has given me the edge I need as I battle Father Time and try to get not only fit, but achieve my BEST shape ever, age be damned! Am I there yet? Nope. Will I get there? Yes! And I think supplementation is playing a HUGE part in my early success.
Here is a typical daily supplementation protocol I have been following over the past 8 weeks:
- Arbonne Chocolate or Vanilla Protein Shake Powder
- Arbonne Daily Protein Boost
- Arbonne Pre and Post workout PhytoSport
- Arbonne Whole Food Blend Multivitamin and Mineral Boost
- Arbonne Energy Fizz Sticks
- Arbonne Evolution Metabolism Support
- Arbonne Full Control
- Vitamin D3
I will continue to follow this supplementation plan and fine-tune it as needed. As they say, if it ain’t broke, why fix it?
To say that I am happy with my progress so far is a HUGE understatement! Have I reached my goals yet? No, the journey has only just begun but the ‘early returns’ are promising. As a man of a certain “vintage”, I was very worried about whether my aging muscles would respond like they used to at 30, even 40 years of age. I had read all of the articles saying that after 50, a man’s best fitness days were behind him and the idea of maintaining, let alone building fresh muscle was a quickly fading pipe dream. To that way of thinking, I can now respectfully say BULLSHIT!
If nothing else, these past eight weeks have taught me that half the battle to regaining one’s health lies in the mind. Advancing age DOES NOT have to be a fitness death sentence. It’s all about redefining and recalibrating our goals. Will we be 30 years old again? No, of course not. BUT… We CAN become the very best version of ourselves at 50, 60 and beyond. Who wants to join me?!!
