Design team Roman + Williams takes us ‘back to the future’ with a dynamic and thoughtful restoration of a Chicago architectural icon.
Well now, it looks like those ‘design dynamos’ Roman + Williams are at it again! With the recent grand opening of the newly re-imagined Chicago Athletic Association Hotel, the husband and wife team of Robin Standefer and Steven Alesch have yet again managed to create a space that is at once forward thinking while being respectful to the past and the results in typical R+W fashion are nothing short of spectacular.
Originally designed by Henry Ives Cobb and completed in 1893, the eleven story building operated as an elite private men’s club until 2007. After surviving a few years of limbo, plans were put into to motion to reinvent the historic structure as a hotel.
Wisely, the investors tapped Roman + Williams to handle the interior redesign and the finished product is a hotel that pays homage to its past while feeling very modern and new. Many of the building’s elaborate architectural details were preserved, as the ornate millwork and tiled floors throughout the interior and the stained glass and cast-iron exterior relief have all been restored.
