In Praise of Renaissance Men and Women!

In baseball they’re called ‘five tool players’. Author Malcom Gladwell termed them Outliers. We call them… Amazing.

Renaissance Man
:  a person who has wide interests and is expert in several areas

We’ve all heard the old saying, “jack of all trades, master of none”. As I sit to write this post, I am acutely, (painfully?), aware that I myself am a walking, textbook example of this very saying. When it comes to the creative realm, my interests, passions and activities are many; graphic designer, musician, interior design enthusiast, writer… Heck, even this blog is dedicated to all things creative. Yet do I truly excel in any of these areas?… No, not really. This interest led the crack investigative crew, (me), here at A Life Designed to do some research and compile a list of just a few of the real ‘Outliers’, both past and present… True Renaissance Men & Women. Sting’s ‘Message in a Bottle’… Literally!

Global superstar, singer-songwriter, philanthropist and all around “cool guy”… Sting adds vintner to his résumé.

If I didn’t have a man crush on this ridiculously talented artist already, I absolutely do now! Sting and his wife Trudy Styler over the past few years have entered the wine-making business to much acclaim and fanfare and the results?… Delicious!

Grown on their palatial retreat in the hills of Tuscany, Sting’s vineyard, iL Palagio, has created three offerings to date; Sister Moon – a Sangiovese 40%, Merlot 30%, Cabernet Sauvignon 30% blend, When we Dance – 95% Sangiovese blended with Canaiolo and Colorino grapes and Casino Delle Vie – a blend of Sangiovese, Canaiolo, Colorino e altri vitigni. The wines feature organic and biodynamic grapes and the vineyard also produces honey, olive oil, vegetables and meat products that are sold on-site.

Of his role in the making of the wine, Sting says; “I have a job in the winery, I go down and play to the wine. I practice down there. And you know, if I play in tune, the wine is better.” Lucky wine!
