Set in a re-imagined historical building located in downtown L.A., the Los Angeles Athletic Club offers something for anyone is search of a stylish experience that harkens back to a bygone era.
An L.A. landmark for over a century, the LACC was founded in 1880 by a small group of businessmen destined to become some of the city’s most influential citizens. Rudolph Valentino practiced boxing here, Charlie Chaplin considered it his home base, and Tarzan himself, Johnny Weissmuller trained for the Olympics in the 7th-floor swimming pool (the first suspended pool in Los Angeles). In 2013, the hotel underwent a massive transformation adding new touches and amenities in an effort to attract a younger demographic. The results are spectacular.
The exclusive workout facilities remain as well as providing multiple eating and special event catering options. For those who want to stay awhile, the LAAC also operates a full service hotel with 72 rooms on the 10-12 floors of the building. Nine themed rooms range in themed decor from “The Country Club” to “The Yacht Club” to “The Bruin Club” and are available to the general public as well as members.
A Life Designed particularly loves the look of the Blue Room, (images shown). Designed with the help of Timothy Oulten, the Blue Room is a hidden bar tucked away within the LAAC that exudes a laid-back, speakeasy vibe, perfect for tipping back a couple on a hot summer day. We’ll raise a glass to that!
With Prague and Tábor in the Czech Republic and Berlin, Germany checked off our ‘must see’ list, A Life Designed is now packing a toothbrush and heading this coming weekend to the amazingly beautiful city of Vienna, Austria.
Per usual, we will be posting tons of pictures of architecture, scenery, nightlife and anything else that catches our ‘designer eye’ and sharing with you both here on the blog as well as on the A Life Designed Instagram page. Until then… Ciao!
Just added to the ALD European adventure short list: Prague’s ‘Hemingway Bar’… Papa would be proud!
As I excitedly begin to compile my ever-growing ‘bucket list’ of things to see, do and and experience during my upcoming European summer sojourn, one stop has definitely bubbled to the top of the “must-see” list. On the advice of a friend who has already been to Prague, I Googled up Hemingway Bar and have to say that from the looks of it, you will most definitely find me cozied up to the bar here more than once during my stay!
While Hemingway Bar was never technically visited by the man himself, this Old Town destination draws inspiration from the classic watering holes from the prolific author’s era, and to great effect.
Based on the images and promotional video, Hemingway Bar ticks all of the boxes of a true, A Life Designed approved establishment; sexy ambiance, vintage-inspired furniture and inventive cocktails! I mean c’mon… What’s not to like?
After studying up on Prague’s Hemingway Bar, all I’ve got to say is; “Keep the Vodka chilled gentlemen, I’m on my way!”

A classy combo of vintage mobile bar and culinary truck, this is one ‘Duke’ that definitely rolls in high style.
So the other night, I’m scrolling through the ever-growing A Life Designed Instagram page when a photo ‘like’ from an unusual sounding Instagram member caught my eye. Always on the lookout for the unique and stylish to share with our ALD readers, I clicked on the profile and am SO glad I did! For low and behold, I suddenly found myself in the presence of The Duke, without a doubt the most stylish and hip vintage event truck in all of the land! Continue reading…
