Set in a re-imagined historical building located in downtown L.A., the Los Angeles Athletic Club offers something for anyone is search of a stylish experience that harkens back to a bygone era.
An L.A. landmark for over a century, the LACC was founded in 1880 by a small group of businessmen destined to become some of the city’s most influential citizens. Rudolph Valentino practiced boxing here, Charlie Chaplin considered it his home base, and Tarzan himself, Johnny Weissmuller trained for the Olympics in the 7th-floor swimming pool (the first suspended pool in Los Angeles). In 2013, the hotel underwent a massive transformation adding new touches and amenities in an effort to attract a younger demographic. The results are spectacular.
The exclusive workout facilities remain as well as providing multiple eating and special event catering options. For those who want to stay awhile, the LAAC also operates a full service hotel with 72 rooms on the 10-12 floors of the building. Nine themed rooms range in themed decor from “The Country Club” to “The Yacht Club” to “The Bruin Club” and are available to the general public as well as members.
A Life Designed particularly loves the look of the Blue Room, (images shown). Designed with the help of Timothy Oulten, the Blue Room is a hidden bar tucked away within the LAAC that exudes a laid-back, speakeasy vibe, perfect for tipping back a couple on a hot summer day. We’ll raise a glass to that!
After way too many years in the making, A Life Designed finally takes on Milan.
Like a sweet, succulent cherry on top of our amazing seven week European adventure, ALD will be fulfilling a lifelong dream of visiting Italy later this week and it’s pretty safe to say we couldn’t be more excited!
Our touchdown point specifically is Milan, ground zero for so much design innovation it boggles the mind. Fashion, architecture, galleries, food, wine… You name it, Milan’s got it and we can’t wait to soak it ALL in.
As with our adventures in Prague, Tábor, Berlin and Vienna, we will be snapping lots of pix and sharing them with you both here on the blog as well as the A Life DesignedInstagram and Facebook pages. Stay tuned!
A classy combo of vintage mobile bar and culinary truck, this is one ‘Duke’ that definitely rolls in high style.
So the other night, I’m scrolling through the ever-growing A Life Designed Instagram page when a photo ‘like’ from an unusual sounding Instagram member caught my eye. Always on the lookout for the unique and stylish to share with our ALD readers, I clicked on the profile and am SO glad I did! For low and behold, I suddenly found myself in the presence of The Duke, without a doubt the most stylish and hip vintage event truck in all of the land! Continue reading…
It’s official! A Life Designed has secured a truly unique opportunity to live and work in Europe for the upcoming months of July and August and it goes without saying, we couldn’t be more excited!
This is happening! ALD will soon be packing our bag and heading to Europe for a summer full of work and adventure! Home base will be the picturesque city of Prague in the Czech Republic where during the week we will be working with our fantastic new client, online media company Digital Airways, providing design services in their main European office and collaborating with a terrific team on several exciting projects. Nights and weekends will be spent exploring as many of the historic and incredible flea markets and antique shops as possible, sourcing unique treasures to add to the A Life Designed Online Store.
Charles Bridge – Prague
With Berlin, Germanyand Vienna, Austria a short train ride away from Prague and parts of Italy a mere one hour hop by plane, the possibilities and opportunity to discover, experience and soak up the history, culture, art and architecture of Europe are endless. Oh and make no mistake, there will be wine drinking… Oh, there will be wine.

…the A Life Designed you’ve come to know, but on steroids!
So, you are probably thinking, “well bully for you, what’s in it for us?” Fair enough! For the followers and clients of the A Life Designed shop and blog, (there are a few), you can expect to see amazing new additions to our store as well as constant blog updates where we will be sharing our “man on the street” view as we explore as much of Europe as time will allow. Think of it as the A Life Designed you’ve come to know, but on steroids!
And to all of the friends of A Life Designed who have experience traveling in Europe and can share helpful tips, I welcome them! (John Benton, I am talking to you sir… which way to the Porsche museum?) 🙂
Much more to come as we get closer to departure. Vzrušující!
While we can’t decide if it’s the $2,500 entry price point or the promise of the rich brew it must create that’s got our eyes wide open, one thing is for sure… this is one stunning home espresso machine. Bello!
Industrial, Retro, Shabby, Hip + Mega-Fun… The Duce has it all!
Scottsdale, AZ residents, husband and wife team and visionaries Steve and Andi Rosenstein are not afraid to take chances, to say the least. Already successful after the sale of their clothing company Fitigues in 2006 to national chain Chico’s, the couple came across a worn out but rich in history 14,000-square-foot building built in 1928 at Central Avenue and Lincoln Street in downtown Phoenix. A Berlin-based vegetarian restaurant breathes new life into an old shipping container.
Located in the Prenzlauer Berg neighborhood of Mitte, Till The Cows Come Home is a new vegetarian slow food and detox food restaurant serving the hip and health-oriented crowd of Berlin.
While the menu does look quite tempting, particularly the “Smells Like Teen Spirit” (a gluten-free banana-chocolate bread), what really caught our eye was the owner’s thoughtful and inventive reuse of an old shipping container as their storefront! From food to store decor, when it comes to sustainability, the crew at TTCCH clearly walk the talk.
The Meatball Shop in New York… Put it on your short list of must dos!
During a long-awaited, albeit whirlwind, visit to New York last year I was taken to the extremely popular and hip Meatball Shop by a friend, tour guide and Village insider, (thank you Sandrine.) I’d read about Michael Chernow and Daniel Holzman, lifelong buddies and the brains behind TMS and I have to say… This place lived up to the hype.
Currently with five locations; Lower East Side, Chelsea, Williamsburg, West Village and Upper East Side, the Meatball Shop empire is clearly on the rise. Do yourself a favor the next time you visit the Big Apple and stop at the Meatball Shop, soak up the atmosphere and treat yourself to one of their amazing meatball creations, the ultimate ‘comfort food!’
