When in Portland, be sure to visit the thoroughly ‘uncommon’ Clyde Common.

Sitting adjacent to the Ace Hotel and nestled on the fringe of Portland Oregon’s trendy Pearl District, Clyde Common beckons to shopped-out visitors and locals alike in search of good food, a comfortable ‘vibe’ and some AMAZING drinks!

Clyde Common features long, communal dining tables, an open kitchen and is decorated in a warm, ‘industrial chic’ vibe that attracts an eclectic mix of creative types, young urban professionals and weary, out-of-town visitors in search of a respite from exploring all that Portland has to offer.

For many people however, (myself included), the REAL draw of Clyde Common is the bar and the amazing array of tasty drinks that are created there. The man behind the ‘magic’ is Jeffrey Morgenthaler, (above), a mixologist extraordinaire who’s cocktails have been featured in numerous magazines and websites. With an associate degree in physics and a bachelor’s in interior architecture, Jeffrey has turned his passion for learning and attention to detail towards creating drinks that are at once surprising and always delicious.

Aside from his obvious talents as a creative force behind the bar, Jeffrey also possesses the rare gift of making every patron feel welcome. Despite long periods of time between my personal pilgrimages to Clyde and only having been there a few times, Jeffrey always remembers me, (uncanny really) and makes me feel as if I am his best, regular customer.

Here are a couple of helpful hints when visiting Clyde Common: On weekends, get there early to find a place at the bar before the evening’s crush of hipsters descend. On Friday and Saturday night, Clyde Common is definitely a place to be ‘seen.’ Most important, if you are fortunate enough to visit when Jeffrey Morgenthaler is behind the bar, simply tell the man your spirit of preference, utter these four, simple words; “What do you recommend?” and then sit back, relax and enjoy!
